Getting Married at
St John's or St Mary's
We are delighted that you are considering a Church Wedding and would love to talk to
you about getting married with us.
Below are some of the Questions people frequently ask us and which may
help you to think about the preparations for your day.
Do I need to live in the Parish of St John’s with St Mary’s to get married at your churches?
If you live in our area (what we call the ‘Parish’) and you have not been married before
then you have the right to get married in either St John’s or St Mary’s.
If you live outside the area then, thanks to a change in the law, it is much easier for you
to get married here – you just need to be able to show that you have a connection
with our church or the area.
If one of you can show that you can fulfil just one of these connections then you can get married here:
• One of you has lived in St John’s Parish or St Mary’s parish for a period of at least 6 months
• One of you was baptised in St John’s or St Mary’s
• One of you was prepared for confirmation by St John’s or St Mary’s
• One of you has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in St John’s or St Mary’s for a period of at least 6 months
If you can’t fulfil one of these then you can still get married here
if one of your parents, at any time after you were born:
• has lived in St John’s Parish or St Mary’s Parish for a period of at least 6 months
• has regularly gone to normal church services in St John’s or St Mary’s for a period of at least 6 months
Finally, if none of these are any good then you can still get married here if:
• One of your parents or grandparents were married in St John’s or St Mary’s
If none of these connections apply to you, then it is still possible for you to get married with us
if you attend our normal church services regularly for at least six months.
However we cannot accept bookings under this arrangement that are less
than 12 months away. Please talk to us if you would like to know more.
How can I find out which Parish I live in?
You can go to www.achurchnearyou.com and enter your Postcode.
It will tell you which parish you live in.
Please note that if your address comes up as either ‘St John’s Mansfield’
or ‘Ladybrook St Mary the Virgin’ then you live in our area.
We have recently joined the two parishes together
but the website has not been updated yet.
What if one of us is divorced?
At St John’s and St Mary’s we do marry people who are divorced –
but we ask you to meet with us and be willing to talk frankly with us about your past.
Even if it is not possible for us to do the wedding, we may be able to offer you
a service of Prayer and Dedication after a Civil Ceremony.
How much does it cost?
There are fees for getting married with us, but the exact amount depends
on which options you choose. Please give us a call and we can discuss
your individual needs with you. However you should not normally expect
the service to cost more than £464. We do also ask for a £40 deposit when you book.
How can I find out more?
